| Often, Sharon Olds explores what is pathetic about humans, emphasizing all the sad little things that are part of our nature. But it isn't meant to be degrating. Even in her well-known poem The Pope's Penis, she isn't trying to be degrating. Her style takes that which we would like to hide and uses it to give a sense of unification among all people.
