He Got Game -- [B]
Although Spike Lee certainly has a talent for creating real and interesting characters, He Got Game seems to be a mediocre plot disguised by its strong performances. Denzel Washington plays a murderer who is let out of jail for a week on a bribe to shorten his sentence. His goal is to get his star basketball player son to go to the school that the governor wishes. You may leave the theatre disappointed that any significant meaning to the film was equal to that of an after-school special or a made-for-tv movie, but despite it weak ending, Spike Lee's portrayal of city life is worth the watch anyway.

The Last Days of Disco -- [B+]
As disco's death approaches, a group of club-going twenty-somethings desperately try to find their places in life. Last Days of Disco humorously follows indiviuals and their problems with dating, business, and friendships. The film appropriately ends as the disco ball crashes to the ground, ending the music era in conjunction with a confused and naive phase of their lives. It is the third in a series of comedic culture studies, preceded by Metropolitan and Barcelona.
